Tips
for Boarding Your Pet
Making the decision to board your pet can be extremely hard
and emotional. Not all boarding facilities are the same and it is very
important for pet owners to do their homework BEFORE it's time to leave their
pet.
First, we recommend you visit the kennel, meet the
owners/staff. Your comfort level will not only come from knowing where
your pet is staying but who will be caring for him or her. Secondly, ask
to see where your pet will be staying.
Other pets at the facility should appear happy, clean and
comfortable. They should have bedding (if allowed), clean water and
something from home that is familiar. The kennel should be free of odors
and temperature controlled. Cleanliness and health are more important than
aesthetics.
Don't be afraid to ask questions. How often pets are
exercised, feeding schedules, emergency plans, etc. Successful boarding is
a two-way street between the caretakers and the owners. The more
that is known about your pet the better their needs can be met. You as the
owner should inform the kennel of any personality traits, such as shy, biter,
digger, fence climber, etc. instead of the staff finding out on their own.
When you are finished with your visit, and if you're not
comfortable with leaving your pet, then go to the next facility.
There is no place like home, and we all miss our pets when
we are away from them. Your peace of mind will come from knowing they will
be healthy and happy upon your return.
